ESTABLISH A SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Three New Scholarship Funds Announced

The Julie G. Lowenberg Scholarship Fund

Established in honor of Julie Lowenberg, a former Foundation Scholarship Committee chairperson, to help undergraduate and graduate level students obtain a higher education. Financial need and community involvement are key factors in the selection process.

The One at a Time Scholarship Fund

Established by Sharon and Brad Roth, is aimed at providing tuition assistance to under-privileged students. This scholarship fund was born from the simple hope that education is the answer to many of today’s social problems. The naming of One-at-a-Time comes from the belief that each of us must take personal responsibility to change the world, one person at a time, one step at a time.

The Arnold and Ruth W. Pian Scholarship Fund

Established by Sally L. Pian and Ira W. Silverman in honor of the 94th birthday of Ruth Pian to enable deserving young people to attend The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Students must be American citizens. Financial need (33%), academic achievement/high scholastic merit (34%) and community involvement (33%) will be considered. One scholarship of $5,000 will be awarded.

Establishing a Scholarship Fund through the Foundation

Establishing a scholarship fund not only allows students who would otherwise not have the means to pursue education, but also is a way you can inspire and support young people while recognizing the contribution education has made to your own life. It can also be an excellent means of honoring or memorializing a loved one.

Helping a deserving student realize his or her academic goals is one of the most rewarding contributions you can make to the Dallas community. Tax-deductible contributions can be made to existing scholarship funds, or used to establish new scholarships.

The Dallas Jewish Community Foundation offers a variety of scholarships each year. Since initiating the program in 1991, the Foundation has awarded over one million dollars in scholarships to deserving students. In 2007, more than $55,000 was awarded.

A scholarship fund can be established based on the criteria you feel is most important. The majority of scholarships are awarded to Dallas-area students, both Jewish and non-Jewish, based on both financial need and academic merit. Some scholarships place a high degree of importance on a specific area of study or extracurricular activity. Some scholarships are university-specific, but some exist for day schools and summer camp as well as for travel abroad programs.

A letter from the Foundation announcing the creation of a scholarship fund can also be sent to friends and relatives, suggesting that donations can be made to the fund in honor of special occasions.
