Who We Are

What is the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation?

The Dallas Jewish Community Foundation (DJCF) originated in 1973 as a committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas and has remained an invaluable resource for philanthropic-minded individuals in the community ever since. In 2006, DJCF became an independent, publicly supported charity, furthering its mission to empower its partners’ charitable vision, safeguard the community’s resources, and build enduring Jewish legacies. DJCF specializes in strategic philanthropy and charitable giving, managing more than $375 million in assets through donor-advised funds (DAFs), individual and general endowment funds, scholarships, and custodial funds, which disburse approximately $27 million annually to deserving nonprofits in Dallas and beyond. Learn more here.

Who runs the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation?

DJCF is run by a diverse group of individuals passionate about helping others in the community achieve their philanthropic goals and increase support for the nonprofit community in Dallas, Israel, and around the world. Our CEO is Megan Hyman, who joined DJCF in 2022 after 15 years at J.P. Morgan. Learn more about all the staff at DJCF, as well as board members and trustees, here.

Who manages DJCF’s investment portfolio?

The Foundation’s investment portfolio is managed by Graystone Consulting, under the guidance of the Foundation Investment Committee. This relationship has allowed us to offer seven investment models for our constituents to choose from. Graystone provides monthly investment return information on the models as a whole and fact cards for the individual models and the sub-funds that make up each model. Learn more here.

What if I have more than one fund?

If you have more than one fund, there will be an option to select which fund you would like to access upon logging in. If you have one fund with us, you will be taken directly to the landing page of that fund.

How do I navigate the portal?

Upon logging in, you can select the tabs at the top of the page and review the different materials available to you as a fund advisor.

What is on the 'Home' tab?

The home tab of the portal displays the current balance, list of advisors on the fund, a list of recent contributions to the fund, and grants made from the fund.

What is on the 'Donation History' tab?

This tab will show all contributions made to your fund. The list can be sorted by clicking on any of the column names. If you select the contributor’s name, it will populate a history of all contributions made to the fund from that specific contributor.

What is on the 'Grant History' tab?

What is on the 'Recommend a Grant' tab?

Fund advisors can make grant requests from the fund’s assets by clicking the grant request tab at the top of the page.

Grant requests are created on the left-hand side of the page.

On the right-hand side of this page, you will see a list of grants requested to be paid along with their current status.

Grant request still in the request stage can be canceled from this screen.

How do I request a grant?

Grant requests are created on the left-hand side of the page under the ‘Recommend a Grant’ tab. You may begin a new grant request by using one of the following options:

  1. Choose a previous grantee from one of the dropdown menus (you can search for previous grantees, funds held at the DJCF, or search for grantees by typing keywords that allow GuideStar and information specializing in reporting on US nonprofit organizations to search for organizations containing those keywords).
  2. If you have not found the organization you want to give to you can enter it manually (you will need name, address, zip code, and phone number for that organization).

Once you have entered those details you can click submit at the bottom of the page.

Next you will type in a description to let the grant team know what the grant is to be used for.

You will add the amount and here is where you will click if wish for the grant to remain anonymous.

In the additional notes section, you can provide any additional notes you want our staff to see before processing your grant request.

You will review this request, then click submit! Once submitted, your request will appear in the list of grants at the bottom of the page.

General Investment Overview

General Investment Overview

How are my Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) assets invested?
Your DAF assets are invested in professionally managed portfolios designed to align with your philanthropic goals and time horizon. The Foundation offers a range of investment options, from conservative to growth-oriented portfolios, allowing flexibility in how your charitable assets are managed. For larger accounts, we also offer the ability to construct your own asset allocation using our funds or to nominate your own investment advisor.
Can I choose how my DAF is invested?
Yes, donors may select from our investment pools, which vary by risk tolerance and expected return. For funds in excess of $1 million, we offer the option to recommend an external investment advisor, subject to our investment policy guidelines.
What are the investment options available?
We offer a variety of investment pools, including:
  • Conservative Portfolio (Lower risk, lower return potential)
  • Balanced Portfolio (Moderate risk, diversified growth)
  • Growth Portfolio (Higher risk, long-term appreciation)

Graystone Consulting, with oversight from our Investment Committee, oversees the performance and allocation of these funds.

Investment Performance & Reporting

Investment Performance & Reporting

How do I access my DAF investment reports?
Donors can access account statements and investment performance reports through our online donor portal (MY DJCF / MY SWCF) or by requesting a report from our team.
How often is investment performance reviewed?
DJCF/SWCF has a robust investment policy that is reviewed on an annual basis. The Foundation’s Investment Committee meets regularly to review performance, asset allocation, and market trends. Graystone provides active monitoring with their investment team to oversee detailed aspects of all investment pools on a more granular basis. Performance reports are available to donors on a monthly basis.
How does the DJCF/SWCF manage investment risk?
We follow a disciplined investment strategy that emphasizes diversification, regular monitoring, and adherence to prudent investment principles. The Foundation’s Investment Committee, with guidance from professional advisors, reviews portfolio performance and rebalances allocations as needed.
What happens to my DAF if the market declines?
Like all investments, DAFs are subject to market fluctuations. However, our diversified investment approach is designed to mitigate risk and provide long-term growth opportunities. If needed, donors can adjust their grantmaking strategy based on market conditions.
Investment Policies & Governance

Investment Policies & Governance

Who oversees the Foundation’s investment strategy?
The Foundation’s Investment Committee, composed of financial experts and community leaders, oversees our investment policies and works with professional investment advisors to ensure funds are managed prudently and effectively. Beginning in 2017, DJCF/SWCF engaged Graystone Consulting, a Morgan Stanley firm as Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO).
How can I change my investment allocation?

Donors may request a change in their investment pool allocation at designated intervals (quarterly). Please contact Jerry Blair, our CFO, for details on timing and requirements at [email protected].

Fees & Costs

Fees & Costs

What are the fees associated with my investments?
Investment fees vary depending on the selected portfolio. Typically, they include:
  • Community Development Fees: Support DJCF/SWCF’s  charitable mission and services.
  • Investment Management Fees: Cover professional asset management costs.
We are committed to transparency, and fee details are available upon request.
What fees are charged for investment management?
DJCF/SWCF transitioned to an Outsourced Chief Investment Office (OCIO) model in 2017.  The Investment Committee (IC) of the Foundation retains the oversight authority of our hired consultant, Graystone Consulting, a Morgan Stanley firm.  The fees charged by our OCIO are an institutional rate and are passed on without markup to our fundholders.  The fees are reported each month in the monthly investment performance reports and fund fact sheets that are published on our website.  Individual fundholders can review their statement to see the fees allocated to their individual funds.
DJCF/SWCF operations are sustained by the Community Development Fee, which is based on assets under management. To see the fee schedule, please contact us at [email protected].
Impact & Mission-Aligned Investing

Impact & Mission-Aligned Investing

Will my DAF investments impact how much I can grant to charities?
Yes, investment growth can increase the amount available for grantmaking over time. However, market fluctuations may also impact fund balances. Our goal is to grow charitable assets responsibly while ensuring long-term giving sustainability.
Are the Foundation’s investments aligned with Jewish values?
Yes, we strive to incorporate investment principles that align with Jewish values and support for Israel. Please contact us to learn more about our approach.
